Ultramarine [U.R.T.H.]

This is my first 40K army that I’ve personally built, converted, and painted every little piece and detail.  The main reason why I picked them up was due to a disappointing finish at Vegas 2008, largely due to my paint scoring.  I was so fed up with the way painting was judged in official GW events and decided that “if I can’t beat them, join them”.  So I picked the most basic SM-Ultramarine as my first chapter and started painted them with exclusive GW paint and GW painting techniques (high contrast, hard high light, and etching around the edge).  I am still not very keen of using metallic color though (I haven’t use any metallic paint since 2006 and I sure wasn’t going to go back when I started this army) so I used Codex Grey with the new (now old) GW black wash and it came out great.

The free hand started as an experimenting project since I was really, really bad at doing transfers (still am).  But it soon became a monster and consumed much of my painting time.  I ended up doing freehand on chapter symbols, skulls, liturgy, and various designs that I contorted myself.  It is just another example of how I turn something that was suppose to help me to save time (I was almost as fast at doing chapter symbols as someone who is doing transfers) into something that wast even more time.

It is due to the above reasons that this army have and forever will have a special place in my heart.  And it is also for that reason alone I found it hard to do battle damage on them – it goes against my prior military training to send damaged equipment to the theatre of war.   Sometimes I wonder if I’ve spent almost as much time as I did on them as I did on my kids (okay… maybe not that long).
